Works on paper;

Working with paper is compelling, maybe it’s the idea that it’s accepting and absorbent. There’s mostly no prep work and it’s ready to use. I especially enjoy the heavyweight (300-600gsm). When I pour water and inks onto the smooth surface of a hot press, Saunders Waterford for example, I am fascinated by the way the paper bubbles up and that causes the inks to run in unpredictable ways. Patterns of the path followed by merging coloured inks are revealed when the inks are dry.

Manipulating water, pigments, inks, charcoal, and acrylic mediums gives me qualities of rock surfaces and natural forms. On paper, I tend to experiment and mix it up a little more. Using screen printing, inks, gold leaf, graphite, acrylics, and sometimes collage to create mixed media pieces or to go minimal and show off the beauty of paper and line. Abstractions from ideas and thoughts while working and researching climate, natural phenomena, and geology are my motivators.

My experience of the geology of Iceland (a residency in June of 2018) continues to influence my work. I returned to Iceland In September 2022 for a residency at Skaftfell in Seydisfjordur, a small town on an Eastern fjord with a ferry service to the Faroe Islands and Denmark.

Rocks & Roots Series

Exploring the Relationship Between Plants and Rocks
This series of 8 drawings delves into the fascinating relationship between plants and rocks—how they coexist, interact, and transform each other. It highlights the process of erosion, where plant roots penetrate stone crevices, slowly breaking down rock over time. In parallel, I’m researching plant species used in the regeneration of abandoned mines and quarries, particularly those that help remediate toxic soils, (arsenic, heavy metals etc. ) and restore ecological balance.
